Nostalgia Train - July 22, 2001
I was so sad to leave the homestay. I thought it was going to be awful, but of course it wasn’t. Sue was so sweet, and me, Court + Mike got her a card. I will miss her.
We then drove about 3 hours to Waterford, Ireland. We went to the crystal factory and saw how the crystal was made. Everything there is done by hand: the blowing, carving, engraving + sculpting. That was the coolest thing. I had no idea that they made the millennium ball that dropped in Times Square.
We finally got to our hotel and then took a walking tour of Waterford. It is actually the oldest Viking city - older than Oslo and Rickevic (I totally spelled that wrong.) Much of the city (the part we toured anyway) was heavily excavated for ancient celtic artifacts. Jack, our guide mentioned 12 countries’ archeologists were here excavating. The Catholic Cathedral here was absolutely gorgeous…the Protestant church was designed by the same guy. Tonight we are taking part in Irish dancing and music. Hopefully it will be as fun as the Scottish dancing!
Clearly, I’ve been a 42 year old woman my entire life if I enjoyed my homestay mom as much as I did haha. I remember she and I watched Sommersby, that movie with Richard Gere pretending to be Jodie Foster’s dead husband and he gets hanged at the end anyway hmmmm.
